Final Reflection

 The reason that Ethan and I were inspired to persur this project was because we wanted to give back to the athletic department at Hawken. Athletics have been a huge part of our life at Hawken and as graduating seniors we wanted to find a way to give back while still helping the future generation to succeed. As we began this project our objective was to build a physical refuel station, but as we started our project it became clear that we would not have the time and materials to do so. So our focuses for the three weeks really went into learning about nutrition, interviewing hogs hills and universities, and laying out the logistics of the station so that someone can one day build it. Put mentors did a great job of making sure we know what we need to helped us get in contact with the right people, and made sure that we were asking the right questions.  Again today was mostly work time, and time spent meeting with coach lew. We spoke about the final logistics about our project, we began our presentation after completing a google doc about how we are going to test the fuel station. We want to start with a test run and then use that data to help us argue the importance of this station!

These next two blog posts are going to be a little shorter then the others, because we are getting to the final steps of our projects. Therefore we do not have a lot to write about other then what we are working on.  However, today we got one last order of Biosteel in and this time it was electrolytes.m. A very similar drink to Gatorade but in our opinion it tasted a tad bit better. There were 5 flavors blue raspberry, peach mango, white freeze, mixed berry, rainbow twist. The best flavor in my opinion was the white freeze, and the worst being the peach mango. In conclusion, they were very good drinks and seemed to have a better effect then Gatorade.

 Today Ethan and I got the opportunity to try some samples of the product we are considering using called BIO STEEL. Bio steel is one of the 2 companies that we are researching in order to get the best option for Hawken.  The company was kind enough to send us a lot of different things to try, the first being electrolyte drinks, and the other being protein powder to mix with water. We first tried the plant based protein which was very good but the ingredients were not the same and that’s not what we would be using for Hawken. So next we tried their recovery protein both chocolate and vanilla they did not have the taste that we wanted and none of the coaches enjoyed them either. However we had another product there that we were able to compare to Biosteel, critical reload. Critical reload is another protein powder supplier, but the big plus with this company is that they have a dispenser that we can purchase off them to make serving a lot easier to athletes. Today Ethan and I had two very important meetings. One was with a Gatorade rep and the other was with Adam from Covington Catholic where he integrated a refuel station. Chris from Gatorade was very kind and helpful we were using him as a test rep in order to get an idea of what Gatorade could offer and how they may be able to offer it. he shared with us three different packages that are up for purchase on Gatorade website

Ethan and I are still in the research part of our project so these next few blog posts are going to consist of interviews and findings. We were able to set up and interview with Endsworth high school in Nashville Tennessee where we spoke to Megan Mitchell their assistants AD. To start off I want to give some background on Endsworth, they are a school in similar size with Hawken, and their tuition is about the same give or take a little bit. However, they are a football powerhouse and athletic run school where a lot of their money goes, have state of the art facilities which includes fields, pools, and multiple weight rooms. We found through your interview that they have 6 or 7 classes a day and integrated into those classes is HP so no matter the grade or time of year the students are always participating in HP.  Today Ethan and I set up an interview with Mike, the head strength coach at Hoban High School. We hopped on a zoom call with Mike and were accompanied by Coach Lew and Coach Devin, where we interviewed Mike on his program at Hoban. Hoban as a high school has one of the most impressive athletic facilities in Ohio, and even blows some colleges out of the water. In our interview, Ethan and I learned a lot about what we must do to push our fuel station. Mike has a deal with Muscle Milk as well he orders for each team if they want the drink for after workouts. We then used what he shared with us to reach out and contact another person, Christopher, who is a Gatorade rep so we are hoping that he will be able to supply us with knowledge on how companies give sponsorships and help out local high schools.  Overall, the interview with Mike was beneficial for our next steps in our project and how we may implement what Hoban has done in our athletic facilities.
